One of the most important families of the United States published a few hours ago a video of their visit to Cuba. And we’re not talking of the Obamas or the Kardashians. The Simpsons were here for a weekend, including old grandpa Abe. This was seen in chapter 7 of season 28 of the series broadcast by Fox.
In “Havana Wild Weekend” The Simpsons come to the island seeking a medical treatment for the elderly grandfather. They have been told that out of the 2,000 dollars they had to pay in the United States it would cost them only 6 in Cuba. However, everything seems to indicate that the best medicine for the Gringo veteran’s ailments are the vintage cars, the Chan Chan, the landscape and one or two troubles involving espionage.
The episode, faithful to its essence, uses situations that are satirical and a bit acid, like the billboard at the entrance to the Havana bay welcoming visitors to Cuba, Russia’s Hawaii or the bureaucratic procedures in Customs.
The family stays in the iconic Hotel Nacional, the children speak Spanish and they all go to dine in one of Havana’s paladares. In a bar, old Abe, while he flirts with a waitress (which will turn out to be a CIA agent), meets an army friend who has set up a cabaret in a hijacked plane.
For Abe, these are the best days of his 86 years and he is afraid that, when he returns, he will forget them, like almost everything else. His euphoria is defined as “Cubagasm” and he ends his return trip against his will.
As was known, the chapter was written a year ago by scriptwriters John Tilden, Dan Castellaneta and Deb Lacusta (the latter inspired on a personal trip). Executive producer Al Jean told the magazine Vanity Latino that they write what they believe will be important in one or five years.
In light of the most recent events in the United States and as a result of the elections, The Simpsons poke fun at the health coverage in a country where, staring next January 20, the so-called ObamaCare could be eliminated, and in which senior citizens live days of oblivion. Although the New York magnate has “changed his mind” regarding some aspects.
This, however, is not the first visit. In a previous chapter, “The Trouble with Trillions,” broadcast during the ninth season, Homer forgets to pay his taxes and has to flee the country. He takes a plane with two friends, lands in Cuba, where he meets with Fidel Castro.
In addition to the hidden message on the island, The Simpsons were the trend when they “predicted” Donald Trump’s arrival in the White House. It was in chapter 17 of season 11, titled “Bart to the Future” and premiered on March 19, 2000, in which Lisa was seen as succeeding Trump in the presidency of the United States.
Dan Greaney, one of those responsible for the script of the chapter “Hollywood Reporter,” commented last March that the idea was released because it was consistent with the vision of America going crazy.
Other U.S. production companies have used the island’s boom after the thawing, among them the franchise for The Fast & the Furious, House of Lies, Discovery Channel and the Conan O’Brien show.
