An earthquake that occurred in the early hours of this Thursday was registered by the National Center for Seismological Investigations of Cuba (CENAIS), the island’s media reported.
The earthquake had a magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale and took place at 4:04 am (local time) this April 16, according to a report by the Granma daily.
The quake did not occur in Cuban territory, but was related to the Motagua fault, in northern Honduras. It had a depth of 25 km and was located 507 km southwest of Sandino, in the province of Pinar del Río.

Perceptibility reports have been received in the Pinar del Río, Viñales, and San Juan y Martínez municipalities, according to the Agencia Cubana de Noticias news agency.
However, Enrique Arango, head of the National Seismological Service of CENAIS, explained to Granma that the center’s specialists “established communication with the Civil Defense to specify the places where perceptibility is reported.”
In addition, the daily affirms that Havana citizens reported having felt an earthquake this morning, which in the opinion of the specialist is possible in tall buildings in the Cuban capital.
“Since it was distant, the earthquake produces a long-term, low-frequency wave that resonates with buildings,” he said.
On January 28, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook several countries in the Caribbean, including Cuba, where it was noticeable in almost the entire country, according to press reports and users of social networks.
The earthquake was located 123 kilometers west-southwest of Cabo Cruz, in the province of Granma, and as a consequence, numerous aftershocks and damage were reported in some buildings in the eastern area.
