In Cuba, the coronavirus already totals 40 deaths and 1,189 infections

Nine critically ill and seven seriously ill patients are reported; 32 people were discharged yesterday to raise the number of recovered to 341.

Forty-two days after the first case of COVID-19 in Cuba was detected, the authorities of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) report 52 new infections and regret the death of 2 people yesterday.

After this morning’s update, the number of patients on the island is 1,189, while the deaths from the SARS-CoV-2 virus reach 40.

The deceased were two men, one 84 years old, from Cárdenas municipality, Matanzas, with a history of vascular dementia and respiratory sepsis; the other, 86 years old, came from the Home for the Elderly No. 3 in Santa Clara and, according to the MINSAP report, had a history of high blood pressure, heart failure and colon diverticular disease.

Nine critically ill and seven serously ill patients are reported. In addition, 32 people were discharged yesterday to bring the total recovered to 341.

The new confirmed cases were Cuban; of them, 43 had contact with confirmed cases and in 9 the source of infection is being investigated.

Of the 52, 31 were men and 21 women; the most affected age groups are: under 40 years, with 26, followed by 26 cases in the 40 to 60 years group with 20 cases; 63.4% of new infections were asymptomatic.

The residence by province and municipality of the new infections is as follows:

  • Havana: 44 (12 from Centro Habana municipality; 7 from San Miguel del Padrón; 4 from Diez de Octubre; Cotorro, Habana del Este and Playa, 3 each; Guanabacoa, La Lisa, Marianao, Boyeros, Plaza de la Revolución, Old Havana and Cerro, one each).
  • Mayabeque: 1 (from the municipality of San José de las Lajas).
  • Matanzas: 1 (from Cárdenas municipality).
  • Villa Clara: 1 (from Santa Clara municipality).
  • Cienfuegos: 1 (from Cienfuegos municipality).
  • Las Tunas: 1 (from Puerto Padre municipality).
  • Holguín: 1 (from Holguín municipality).
  • Santiago de Cuba: 1 (from Santiago de Cuba municipality).
  • Guantánamo: 1 (from Guantánamo municipality).

3,425 people were admitted to hospitals for clinical epidemiological surveillance and 5,497 received monitoring at home from the primary health care system.

The mortality rate in Cuba is 3.36%, “below the world’s and the Americas,” according to Francisco Durán, national director of epidemiology of the MINSAP, who believes that the fact that there are so many isolated and hospitalized people as contacts and suspects helps in that regard.

At the end of April 21, Cuba had made a total of 32,276 tests.
