Descemer Bueno: A bolero to save your life

The fact that Descemer Bueno is an essential artist in the current Cuban music scene, it is proved, in the first instance, by the restless flock of people on Tuesday December 26, long before eight thirty at night, that were lurking outside the Mella Theater ready for anything.

Descemer is one of those names that ordinary Cubans learnt of a little late, because he is one of the composers who became popular in the country bouncing or not bouncing, but when he returned after succeeding internationally by a landslide.

In a stage-themed seductively intimate and symbolic, this virtuoso six feet tall mulatto sported as a boy and caused moments of real complicity. With a broad spectrum of guests, so extensive that the needle moved from Santiago Feliu to Haila, Descemer sang what he had to sing. Anthological songs as I wanna fly with you and all his recent successes, widely disseminated, with more than enough merits, on radio and television. Oddly enough, because what is needed the less today for radio and television to broadcast  is artistic quality.

But let’s get back to the concert. Descemer was right to postpone for another occasion the telluric repertoire of Yerbabuena. The Mella is a wonderful theater, I prefer it over any other-the Mella  is capable of casting on a mediocre plays or lousy voice singers a veil of piety, but its corridors, or its exterior, are not good to dance and to cast off with the easiness  Descemer the African deserves, the Descemer of drums, of Chango and lightning in the sky. The ancestral Descemer of  health and development.

There were no low points among the guests. No Kelvis Ochoa, by course. No Luna, with her shattering voice. No Baby Lores, eager to redeem after his reggaeton stage-he doesn’t bother me at all. Santiago Feliu, the great Santiago, was singing happy in a way so hoarse and personnel made much of the public forget his namesake-Alvarez-that we all carry inside.

Well Descemer is, among Cubans, the greatest composer of contemporary boleros. He is able to get into music this line: "If the attempt evaporates I will be that smoke.”Or this one: "the feeling I get from your scent in the wind is common for calm. "Verses between verses, ready to bump into any poetic ring. It should be known that the feeling that will not fit in a bolero is not a feeling, and that whatever you’re feeling, in some nonexistent jukebox, an already dead bolero singer sang.
