Back in the 1930s Argentinean singer Carlos Gardel made popular a phrase that included in one of his most famous tangos “Volver” (Return): “Twenty years are nothing”…by ninety must be. Especially when it comes to working non-stop like the Cuban Radio has done since its founding on August 22, 1922.

The art gala to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the first continuous radio broadcasts in the history of Cuba will take place on Wednesday August 22, 2012 at 8:30 pm in the Lázaro Peña Theater, located on Drenaje Street in Central Havana.

The activity will include the performances of David Blanco, Yumurí y sus hermanos, Yuly and Habana C, Tania Pantoja, Baby Lores, the Muñequitos de Matanzas, the Comparsa de la FEU, David Alvarez y Juego de Manos, Ktgoria 5 and Pedrito Calvo.

Roberto Fonseca y Temperamento, Danay Suarez, Maylu, Hipnosis, Grettel Barreiro, the Cuban TV Ballet, DJ Alex and Fiesta Habana, comprise the rest of the cast to liven up the night in the Havana city’s theater.

During the celebrations Manuel Mazorra, prominent journalist, writer, and director of programs with the national Radio Progreso station will receive the 2012 National Radio Award.

As part of the activities for the 90th anniversary, the First International Biennial of the Cuban Radio is running in Havana from August 21 to the 24. The Tulipan Hotel in the capital hosts theoretical workshops, conferences and the event’s awards ceremony, involving researchers, filmmakers, journalists and other prominent Cuban and foreign specialists.

Cuba will charge people who travel abroad for PCR tests, at least if the country to which they are going “requires it.”
