El Capitolio de La Habana es un símbolo de la ciudad en medio de la decadencia y las restauraciones. Aquellos que andan alrededor de sus alrededores siempre lo buscan como un punto de referencia. Ubicado en el centro de la capital cubana, entre las calles Prado, Dragones, Industria y San José, este coloso con fachada neoclásica marca el kilómetro cero de la Carretera Central de Cuba.
Recibió el Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente y la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba en diferentes momentos y, desde 2010, es parte de un proceso de restauración de capital para volver a ser el hogar del parlamento cubano, aunque desde el pasado noviembre forma parte de La Asamblea Nacional de Cuba reside allí en sus salones y hemiciclos reparados.

Recientemente se anunció que la empresa estatal rusa Goszagransobstvennost convocó un concurso de proyectos para la restauración de la capa de oro de la cúpula del Capitolio. A finales de agosto, el proyecto ganador deberá ofrecer soluciones para fortalecer la estructura de la cúpula y su revestimiento con piedra natural (arenisca), el revestimiento con nuevas placas de bronce y su revestimiento con láminas de pan de oro, con un presupuesto de 20. Millones de rublos (354 mil dólares) asumidos por el gobierno ruso.
El Capitolio es una leyenda especialmente para el diamante que lo habitaba, que solía pertenecer a Nicolás II, el último zar de Rusia, robado el 25 de marzo de 1946 de la propiedad y recuperado el 5 de junio del año siguiente. Fue reemplazado por una réplica en 1973 por razones de seguridad y se guardó en la caja de seguridad del Banco Central de Cuba.
