Cuban Baseball Fans Put Together Their Dream Team

In Cuba, where everyone is a baseball coach, fans take every opportunity to speak their minds about this or that player, or criticize this or that decision made by team managers.

Last week one of our journalists wrote an article for the OnCuba Spanish website presenting his ideal line-up and inviting readers to contribute with their own proposals for their Cuban dream team.

We processed readers’ proposals, and although many of the line-ups submitted were not very similar, we averaged out the players named, also taking the batting order into consideration.

This final selection only includes players who were born in Cuba, which was one of the initial requirements.

These are the players who obtained the most votes.

CATCHERS

In the selection of catchers, people preferred good offensive players. Grandal was the most popular with overwhelming majority. Bryan Peña got a couple of votes more than Morejon.

INFIELDERS

Cuba has been prolific in the production of good shortstops over the last few years, to the point that four players tied in this position. The best first base was Pito Abreu, the most voted for second base was Gerrero, and the third base was dominated by Gourriel.

Line-up: 1-Martín CF, 2-Puig RF, 3-Gourriel 3B, 4-Abreu 1B, 5-Despaigne DH, 6-Céspedes LF, 7-Guerrero 2B, 8-Grandal C, 9-Echeverría SS.
