The proposals in Spanish from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Cuba and Spain, were not among the nine finalists for the esteemed award.

The films selected for the Spanish speaking countries to qualify for the foreign language at the Oscar’s 86th edition have been left out of the race for the statue and didn’t make it past the first cut of finalists, as published by the Academy Awards.

The institution that gives the awards every year unveiled the list of nine films from which they will choose the names of the five nominees on 16 January.

The movies chosen were:

Germany, Two Lives, (Zwei Leben, Georg Maas)

Belgium, Alabama Monroe (The Broken Circle Breakdown, (Felix van Groeningen)

Bosnia – Herzegovina, An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker, (Danis Tanović)

Eliminated from the contest , which was attended initially by 76 films, were ten proposals in Spanish Argentina ( German physician, Lucia Puenzo ) , Colombia (La Playa DC, Juan Andrés Arango ), Chile (Gloria , Sebastián Lelio ) Ecuador ( Best not to talk about certain things , Javier Andrade ) , Spain (15 years and one day , Gracia Querejeta ) , Mexico ( Heli, Amat Escalante ) , Peru ( The Cleaner , Adrian Saba ) , Uruguay ( Anina , Alfredo Soderguit ) Venezuela ( Gap silence, Luis Alejandro Rodriguez and Eduardo Andrés Rodríguez ) and Dominican Republic ( who’s the Boss ? , Ronni Castillo) , all aspiring to replicate the success of the Chilean No ( Pablo Larrain ) , who opted for an Oscar in the last ceremony.

Saudi Arabia and Iran also are out of the fight for the Oscar. There were several surprises in the announcement of the films that pass the Oscar’s screening in the Best Foreign Language category. Some of the favorites that failed this year were the representatives of Saudi Arabia, The Green Bicycle, (by the director and writer Haifaa Al Mansour) , shot entirely in that country, and Iran. Asghar Farhadi cannot get her second Oscar since El Pasado (The past) , another powerful proposal of the season, said goodbye as well.

The 86th edition of the awards ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday March 2, 2014.
