Western Union (WU) expanded its “pilot test” for sending remittances to Cuba with the opening of new offices in Florida, where there are already 300 available for this purpose, according to a Univision report.

Western Union would have 343 entities distributed in 65 municipalities enabled for these transactions, according to the source.

The U.S. chain reiterated that up to a limit of $2,000 per transaction can be sent to those who have accounts or debit cards at Banco Popular de Ahorro (BPA), Banco Metropolitano S.A. and Banco de Crédito y Comercio (BANDEC).

To extract said transfers, a valid identification issued by the Cuban government must be presented.

The company reported that it plans to expand the remittance service to Cuba to other states and also to other countries.

Among the entities from where it is possible to send remittances to Cuba are Navarro, Sedanos, La Fama Supermarkets, Florida Check Cashing, Price Choice Foodmarket, J&R Century, Éxito Supermarket, Mundo Communicatel.

The resumption of the remittance service to the island through Western Union began in a “test phase” at the beginning of the month in 24 Florida entities.

At that time, a message from Gabriella Fitzgerald, president of the WU North America division, was made public, in which she reported: “It is with great pleasure that we announce the resumption of our operations in Cuba with an initial test phase of the outbound service from the United States linked to clients with Cuban bank accounts through select U.S. agent locations.”

In 2020, due to the Donald Trump administration’s measures, more than 400 points that the U.S. company had on the island were closed.
