January already worst month for Cubans due to coronavirus

The new infections soared to 825, breaking the record that had been set yesterday of 786 cases in 24 hours.

With the four deaths from COVID-19 reported by the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) this Wednesday, January becomes the worst month for Cubans as a result of the pandemic.

For weeks the highest number of infections has been reported, which is 11,383 cases; but now the death toll has also become the highest since March: 58, bringing the total number to 204.

Three men and one woman, from Pinar del Río, Havana, Villa Clara and Santiago de Cuba, and all over eighty years of age, are the characteristics of the new fatalities, whose data is explained in today’s report. The lethality rate of the island is 0.87%.

The new infections, meanwhile, shot up to 825, breaking the record that had been set yesterday of 786 cases in 24 hours.

Havana is once again the most critical territory with its 334 patients diagnosed on Tuesday, when Santiago de Cuba also reported 195 patients and Guantánamo 95.

Ten municipalities in these provinces, along with two in the same number of territories: Ciego de Ávila and Matanzas, concentrate 46.2% of the incidence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the last 15 days.

But, in general, 14 provinces have found new infections this time, mostly autochthonous, which constitute the source of transmission of 801 reported cases.

In short, of the 825 infections today, 733 were related to confirmed cases, in 24 the source of infection is located abroad and in 68 the source of infection is not specified. Of this total, 43% were asymptomatic.

The total number of hospitalized patients as of midnight Tuesday had risen to 10,154, and active cases reached 4,864.

The day stands out in a positive way for the 14,527 tests carried out and the 622 patients who were discharged.

Meanwhile, 43 people remained in intensive care; 16 in critical condition and 27 in serious condition, including a 5-year-old girl; 89 children under the age of 20 tested positive for the new coronavirus yesterday.
