The exception of tariff payment on import of food, hygiene items and medicine in the luggage of passengers arriving in Cuba will be valid until June 30, 2022, as announced by the General Customs of the Republic of Cuba (AGR) on its official website.
The measure was taken on July 16, when the Ministry of Finance and Prices issued Resolution 309 published in the Gaceta Oficial No. 62, Extraordinary, in which it established the flexibility of the customs regulations in force in this regard until December 31 of this year.
In this way, the Cuban government met a demand from its citizens, inside and outside the country, who have been suffering from the lack of these products, motivated, among other causes, by the deep economic crisis that the island is suffering — aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic —, the postponement of economic reforms and the U.S. economic embargo.
Considering that the complex situation persists, groups of Cuban emigrants also carried out a campaign with the aim of keeping the measure in force, which, unsurprisingly, has enjoyed wide acceptance by the population.
The information provided by the AGR reiterates that for the effectiveness of this benefit, it is a requirement that these products be differentiated from articles of another nature.
In addition, the tariff benefits granted through resolutions 318 and 321 of July 2021, approved by the Ministry of Finance and Prices, related to the import of these products by state entities and international economic associations, are extended until June 30, 2022, as well as for the inputs and raw materials that state entities import to meet the demands of non-state forms of management.
