Cuba is news

A lot of people don’t understand why this little island is so talked-about. It’s true that sometimes we Cubans tend to exaggerate, but when we consider our archipelago’s size and population, we can’t deny it: Cuba is news.

In recent months, the island has once again made headlines. The restoration of diplomatic relations with the United States, the opening of embassies in both countries, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to Havana—they’ve all turned eyes toward Cuba. In September we were visited by Pope Francis. While our country is not majority Catholic, it has been one of the few nations to welcome the last three popes, matched only by Brazil.

We address these issues in OnCuba’s issue no. 31. We recommend that you check out our interview with William LeoGrande, an outstanding U.S. political scientist; as well as an article by the Cuban intellectual Carlos Alzugaray regarding the repercussion of Kerry’s visit to Havana; and also a look at the structure of the Catholic Church in Cuba.

In this issue, you will also find a tour of Havana’s El Vedado district; an analysis of the relationship between Cuban baseball and the U.S. Major Leagues; the latest offers from the legendary Havana Club rum; and an interesting encounter of Cuban chefs in U.S. restaurants, among others.

Once again we invite you to get closer to Cuba through our magazine, and to discover for yourself just what it is that makes this island news.
