Cuban scientists are carrying out a study on the incidence of genetic factors in the predisposition of some people to acquire COVID-19 and develop symptoms of the disease, or not.

As part of the research developed by the National Group of Genetics, specialists are processing extensive information about people who have acquired the new coronavirus to determine the role of genetics in their different clinical evolutions, Cubadebate reported.

The results of the study will be made public once the investigation concludes, Dr. Francisco Durán, director of epidemiology of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), affirmed during his daily appearance to report on the situation of COVID-19 on the island.

Some international research indicates a certain propensity for people with type A blood to acquire COVID-19 more easily and to present complications, Durán said.

The study of patients recovered from the disease will begin this week in the capital’s municipality of La Lisa, the newspaper Tribuna de La Habana reported.

The director of the Center for Medical Genetics, Beatriz Marcheco, explained that the evaluation will be carried out with the consent of the patients and in close coordination with the municipal health departments.

According to local media, the genetic study of patients and their close relatives is also progressing in the southern provinces of the eastern region of Cuba: Guantánamo, Granma and Santiago de Cuba.

The island has a national network of Medical Genetics Services, with provincial departments, in which the preparation of human resources in the diagnosis of more than 100 genetic diseases stands out.

Of a total of 2,318 patients confirmed with COVID-19 in Cuba, 2,123 have been discharged, according to the MINSAP report at the close of Monday.

COVID-19 infection figures remain contained in Cuba; three cases reported today, no deaths

The number of contagions detected in the last 24 hours were again three, according to the island’s health authorities, who celebrate another day without deaths from COVID-19 in Cuba, whose death toll is still 85.

With this data, the case fatality rate of the disease on the island is 3.67% and the country ranks 18th in the Americas region, where this rate is 5.05%.
