Officials from Cubana de Aviación said this Monday in Havana that flights to Spain will continue, despite the suspension of the Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) compensation mechanism in that European market.

The measure was notified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Venus Rodríguez Hernández, legal and insurance director of Cubana de Aviación, declared that the airline will honor the commitments made with clients and that it will not cease operations.

For her part, Karelia Fernández Rivero, economic-accounting director of Cubana de Aviación, said that the BSP is a system created by IATA to facilitate work between agencies and airlines, and that allows airlines to have a better financial control over the sales they make for their flights.

Cubana, she stressed, adjusts its commercial strategies in the Spanish market because the bank that makes the compensations stated the impossibility of continuing its activities. The measure, she said, places that company at a disadvantage compared to other international airlines, and is a consequence of the U.S. blockade.

The legal and insurance director assured that it was not the first time they had received this notification of cancellation from the BSP.

On previous occasions, lATA has adopted the measure in markets such as Mexico, France and Italy.
