The Central Bank of Cuba announced Monday the next issue of national banknotes (CUP) with new security measures, without specifying the date of circulation of paper money with a new design or other more substantial change.

The press release published by Granma newspaper clarifies that the money issued in years prior to 2014 remains valid and of legal tender.

Banknotes printed in 2014 will have new watermarks that can be seen against the light: one “located in the upper part to the left of the patriot with the number of the denomination of the bill.”

The other will be exclusive to the notes of 20, 50 and 100 pesos; “Located on the left front of the banknote, the patriotic image that identifies the denomination (Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in the 100-peso note, Calixto García in the 50 peso bill and Camilo Cienfuegos in the 20 peso one).”

According to the Central Bank of Cuba, “these new features are shown on posters that can be seen in all bank branches and the retail network.”
