Cuba registers another increase in deaths and there are already 500 fatalities from COVID-19

Of the 1,040 infections, the majority owe the disease to autochthonous transmission (1,015), 988 were contacts of confirmed cases, and the Cuban travelers who acquired the infection abroad increased to 25; 46 foreigners were diagnosed: one Italian and 45 Indians

This Thursday Cuba again registered another peak of deaths due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus: nine, residing in municipalities of Havana, Matanzas and Santiago de Cuba. It also registered 1,040 COVID-19 cases, according to this Friday’s report by the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).

With these victims, three women and six men, aged between 58 and 82 years, the death toll from the pandemic in the country now stands at 500; of them, 75 so far in April, a month that presents a positivity rate of 0.49%.

Meanwhile, most of the 1,040 infections owe the disease to autochthonous transmission (1,015), 988 were contacts of confirmed cases, and the number of those who acquired the infection abroad increased to 25, which is why Dr. Francisco Durán, during his daily appearance, has reiterated the importance of “the protocols established for travelers.”

Among the countries with the highest incidence rate, this time Russia stands out, although cases of travelers from the United States, Spain, Italy and Venezuela were also reported. Along with the Cubans, 46 foreigners were diagnosed: one Italian and 45 Indians.

By provinces, Havana (567) and Matanzas (158) registered the highest number of cases, however, Santiago de Cuba (86), Granma (72) and Santi Spíritus (56) showed an increase in their records.

On the contrary, Guantánamo (eight), Holguín (eight) and Las Tunas (three) presented the lowest figures. The Isla de la Juventud special municipality did not notify cases on the day.

The municipalities of Old Havana, Cabaiguán and Regla lead the 12 that concentrate 44.7% of infections in the last 15 days, during which the highest incidence rates per 100,000 inhabitants correspond to the provinces of Havana, Matanzas, Sancti Spíritus and Granma.

By age: 119 were under 20 years; 380 between 20 and 39; 395 between 40 and 59, and 146 over 60.

There were 1,021 discharges, while 73 remained in intensive care: 30 in critical condition and 43 in serious condition.

Until midnight, 25,124 people were hospitalized due to this disease on the island, 16,460 were under surveillance and there were 4,750 confirmed active cases.

According to the MINSAP, yesterday 22,418 samples were processed in the molecular biology laboratories of the Cuban health system and 49.9% of the positive cases were asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis.
