A dozen opponents of the Cuban government met with a US congressional delegation visiting the island. At the meeting, the lawmakers heard the views of dissidents regarding US intentions to resume relations with the Caribbean nation.
For more than two hours, opponents expressed their reservations about the turn of bilateral diplomatic ties, because they believe that only favor the government of the island. One of the group members told EFE that “the resources it receives (the government) is going to be used to strengthen its repressive machinery, and we will continue the same.”
However, this is a radical opinion in dissent, as several of its members were in favor of the rapprochement.
Among the opposition representatives attending the exchange were activists, independent journalists and former political prisoners members of the so-called Cuban National Commission for Human Rights and Reconciliation (CCDHRN). So far it is unknown whether the meeting with opponents will somehow influence the preliminary meetings for Monday between the Democratic delegation and the Cuban government.
