Cuban authorities will inspect ICUs due to increase in deaths from COVID-19

“I have ordered that the work in ICUs be reviewed and to delve into all the causes of the re-outbreak of COVID-19 in Cuba, which should not be sought only in the aggressiveness of the new strains that circulate in the country,” Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel tweeted.

Given the alarming number of deaths from COVID-19 reported on Wednesday, the Cuban authorities ordered “a review of the work in the ICUs of hospitals,” especially in Havana, Cubadebate reported.

The deputy head of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), Regla Angulo, announced that two working groups were created, with intensivists, experts, and MINSAP officials to inspect “the hospitals in the capital, the intensive care units, the intensive surveillance rooms and also the Coordinating Board, where patients with COVID-19 are classified,” Cubadebate reported.

During a government analysis on the epidemiological situation caused by the coronavirus on the island, Angulo explained that they will evaluate what is related to human resources, equipment, medicines and expendable resources.

COVID-19 took the lives of 18 people on Wednesday in Cuba, of which 16 died in hospitals in Havana; both figures constitute records for the pandemic on the island, which began in March 2020.

The governor of the Cuban capital, Reinaldo García Zapata, acknowledged that the day was very complex for the city, “which confirms that we are in a different moment of the epidemic, based on the high transmission in all municipalities.”

He added that in addition to the deaths, Havana hospitals reported the highest daily hospitalizations of suspected cases, and of those diagnosed with the coronavirus, with 648 new patients.

On his part, Díaz-Canel not only warned about the increase in transmission and the lethality of the disease in Havana, but also underlined the rise in the number of critical and serious cases compared to the previous day.

“We must analyze how these people are reaching the most serious stages of the disease because we have protocols designed to care for patients, since they are suspected of suffering from the disease, and to prevent their getting complicated,” said the Cuban president.
