Dr. Francisco Durán, national director of epidemiology of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), reported this Friday that 136 children have been infected on the island with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
The evolution of pediatric patients in Cuba has been satisfactory, “in correspondence with the behavior of the disease at an international level,” Durán explained at his daily press conference to address the situation of COVID-19, reported the Agencia Cubana de Noticias news agency.
After reporting 50 new positive cases of patients with the virus, the total number of those infected on the island reached 1,285, of which 10.6 percent are children.
The expert in epidemiology explained that the provinces with the most registered cases are Villa Clara, with 27, followed by Havana (26), Ciego de Ávila (14) and Pinar del Río (12).
Sancti Spíritus accumulates 11 coronavirus patients in pediatric ages, Holguín (9), Santiago de Cuba (8), Mayabeque (7) Matanzas and Camagüey (6 each), Granma, Artemisa, Cienfuegos and the Isla de la Juventud Special Municipality (2 each), and Las Tunas and Guantánamo with one.
According to Dr. Durán, of those 136 children, eight are under the age of one, 19 are in the 1-4 age range, 34 in the 5-9 range, 35 in the 10-14 range, and 40 in the 15 to 18.
On the other hand, Durán explained that of the 1,285 cases of COVID-19 in Cuba, 102 have needed intensive care, and 51 of them required artificial respiration due to complications of the disease.
Quoted by the Agencia Cubana de Noticias news agency, the doctor noted that 11 of those patients have come out of critical condition, seven remain in therapies, and that the average days of use of respirators is 8.5.
According to Durán, in the hospitals where people with the COVID-19 are treated, 29 patients have died, which represents 28.4 percent, which together with the eight who have died in the intensive care units of other facilities, total 37, for a 36.2 percent mortality rate, below international reports.
In Cuba, the MINSAP authorities reported that the disease has claimed 49 lives after having reported this Friday its worst day with six deaths. The deaths correspond to four women and two men.
