Four Cubans films in New York
Four contemporary Cuban films were selected to be exhibited at the Stony Brook University Hispanic American Film Festival, which dedicates its edition to Cuba this year. The companion, by Pavel Giroud (April 10); The Wall of the words, by Fernando Perez, (April 11); Conduct, by Ernesto Daranas, (April 18); and Esteban, by Jonal Cosculluela, (April 20) will be screened on April 10, 11, 18 and 20, when the festival will be held.
Organized by Gisele Blain, from the Hispanic American Literature Department at Long Island, New York, the presentations and debates will focus on Cuban film production as well as health and education issues in Cuba. The show will be developed in collaboration with Bach Media film producer, based in New York, and its founder Jesús Hernández, who will give a lecture on the independent production process in Cuba today on April 11, taking as an example The wall of the words, by Fernando Pérez.
Bach Media is a company committed to the future of cinema in Cuba and it works to make visible the cinema made inside and outside of the Island. Since its foundation, Bach Media has participated in dissimilar projects to stimulate and promote the knowledge and the diffusion of Cuban cinematography, having the Big Apple as center. The company has sponsored several events such as the Havana Film Festival in New York, 2016, and has collaborated on various cultural projects with the CUNY Graduate Center and the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami.

One day in 1988, Oh Dae-su, a man who lives a normal life with his wife and little daughter, is kidnapped in front of his house. When he wakes up, he is locked up, without knowing where or why. While trying to clarify what has happened to him, he hears in the news that his wife has been brutally murdered; Dae-su is the main suspect, since his blood has been found at the scene of the crime. Time passes, and little by little, it gets used to the penumbra of its cell and swears that it will take revenge of the man who has destroyed its happiness. One day, he is released; they have left him a mobile phone and a wallet full of money. He receives the call of a stranger, who tells him that now it is his turn to discover the reason for his imprisonment… A very well film realized by the writer and director Park Chan-wook and second chapter of his Trilogy of revenge. In 1944, in the Auschwitz concentration camp, the Hungarian Jewish prisoner Saul, one of those responsible for burning the corpses of the prisoners and cleaning the gas chambers, finds some moral survival trying to save from the crematorium the body of a child taking it as his son. CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON / Ang Lee (120 ‘) China-Hong Kong-Taiwan-USA, 2000 / st. Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, Cheng Pei-Pei, Lung Sihung. Colors. China, early 19th century. The theft of a legendary sword reunites two old friends with a secret in common. It is the powerful martial arts master Li Mu Bal, owner of the missing weapon, and Yu Shu Lien, who was currently guarding it and now investigates who may have stolen it. Despite the accusations that point to the famous assassin Jade Fox, Shu Lien’s searches lead her to the very home of Governor Yu. Place 35.
TIMBUKTU / Le chagrin des oiseaux / Abderrahmane Sissako (97 ‘) France-Mauritania, 2014 / st. Spanish / Ibrahim Ahmed, Abel Jafri, Toulou Kiki, Layla Walet Mohamed, Mehdi A. G. Mohamed, Hichem Yacoubi, Kettly Noël, Fatoumata Diawara. Colors. 2012. The city of Timbuktu in Mali has fallen into the hands of religious extremists. Kidane lives peacefully in the dunes with his wife Satima, his daughter Toya and Issan, a 12-year-old shepherd boy. But in the city the inhabitants suffer a regime of terror: it is forbidden to listen to music, laugh, smoke and even play football. The chaos that reigns in Timbuktu does not seem to affect Kidane, until the day when his fate changes abruptly. Place 36.

Surprisingly, the ghosts of his deceased wife and his missing son appear to him and take him under their wings. While meditating on the motives of his illness, Boonmee will traverse the jungle with his family until he reaches a cave on top of a hill, the birthplace of his first life. Place 37.
CITY OF GOD / Cidade de Deus / Kátia Lund, Fernando Meirelles (130 ‘) Brazil, 2002 / st. Spanish / Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino, Phellipe Haagensen, Douglas Silva. Colors. At the beginning of the 80’s, Cidade de Deus is one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro. Busca-Pé lives there, a young man who does not integrate into the criminal life of the local gangs and discovers that he has skills for photography. A childhood friend, on the other hand, will become a dangerous assailant. Place 38.

Colors. Colonial America, early 17th century. An epic adventure about the confrontation of two cultures during the founding of the colony of Jamestown (Virginia) in 1607. Inspired by the legend of John Smith and Pocahontas: an ambitious colonizer and a passionate native of high lineage who are divided between their duties and feelings. Place 39.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN / Ang Lee (130 ‘) US-Canada, 2005 / st. Spanish / Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Randy Quaid, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams. Colors. Wyoming, summer of 1963. Two young cowboys, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, meet while applying for work from the village rancher. Both are very clear about the future they want: getting a steady job, getting married and having children. However, something inside them makes them look for something else. They are sent to work as shepherds to the majestic Brokeback Mountain and, little by little, what begins as friendship becomes something deeper. Place 40.
The Young Exhibition reaches its 16
The Young Exhibition ICAIC will take place until next April 9, this year it reaches its edition number 16. Based at the Charles Chaplin Cinema, the event will also feature screenings in 23 y 12 Cinema, home of the Cuban Cinémathèque. Diversity of themes characterize the 2017 exhibition, which presents 25 works of fiction, 10 documentaries and 5 animations that address, among others, eroticism, sexuality, childhood and the family as a point of conflict.
Filmmakers Léster Hamlet and Maryulis Alfonso Yero, actor Mario Guerra Ferrera, director of photography Denise Guerra and art director Maykel Martínez Gutiérrez form the jury that will select the main awards. In addition, the best poster will be also awarded and the prize of the public will be presented for the first time, by which the audience can vote through their mobiles.
The Bonus section, in which 15 works not included in the contest will be shown, is one of the novelties of this year and will also be held the usual conversations, courses and the space Moviendo Ideas, dedicated to the debate about the Cuban audiovisual panorama.
The weekend in FAC
For this Friday, April 7, at 8:30 p.m., Cuban Art Factory (FAC) proposes a class of contemporary dance, open to the public, taught by the dancer and choreographer Osnel Delgado, director of the Mal Paso Company. Half an hour later, the Mars Project will be presented with the dance work “Lost” with choreography by Jorge Ramírez (Niche) and performed by Jairon Pérez, Elias Leyva, Erismel Mejías and Leydis Torres. At 11:00 pm X Alfonso, David Blanco, Yissy Garcia and Ernesto Blanco, will join their band La Flota to give some of their songs, and others unpublished, in a concert that will take place in the Nave 4.
On Saturday, the Fresko project will present the collection Nostalgias, 95{bb302c39ef77509544c7d3ea992cb94710211e0fa5985a4a3940706d9b0380de} cotton fabrics, by designers Gisel Reigada Amador and Mariela Hurtado Ramírez, in Nave 3 at 9:00 pm. At 11:00 pm Alejandro Falcón, a prominent musician Cuban and winner of the JoJazz contest in the category of Composition, will offer a concert at Nave 4.
For Sunday, at 9:00 p.m. in the Nave 3, FAC reserves the presentation of the work The mirror, by Ludi Teatro. Directed by Mariam Montero, the musical piece involves seven actors who are given the task of radiating the text The comb and the mirror, by Abelardo Estorino. In the bombastic radial space Your heart’s novel, the character of Rosa wants to recover the love of Christopher and does the impossible to achieve it. That same day at 11:00 p.m., the singer and jazz composer Zule Guerra will be in concert at Nave 4. Zule is noted for her novel way of doing jazz, through Nujazz; mixing jazz language with various genres such as funk, electronic and Latin American music.
Hispanic impact of the Spanish Ballet of Cuba
With the show Hispanic Impact of the Spanish Ballet of Cuba, the dance company will continue celebrating its 30 years. As the critic Toni Piñera stated, the company directed by the dancer and choreographer Eduardo Veitía “in all this time it has managed to create a contemporary theatrical language based on the cultural complex of flamenco and other roots of our idiosyncrasy, which is not in any way some sort of dead tradition, but a powerful popular sap that flows with all force in the current essence of Hispanics.
The emblematic Martí Theater will host the show that recalls the early days of the Spanish Ballet of Cuba, with a program that includes emblematic pieces and in which the soprano Maria Eugenia Barrios will be invited.
The functions will be on April 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 at the usual theater hours, Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m.
Solamente solos summon
The Cuban National Council of the Performing Arts, the platform danzar.cu and the Provincial Council of the Performing Arts in Holguín, invite to the 17th edition of the Solamente solos Choreography and Interpretation Competition, to be held from May 6 to 10, 2017 at the Eddy Suñol Theater, Holguín.
Under the motto Dance: broadening its borders, choreographers and professional dancers or dance students of all manifestations are summoned, whenever they consider in their proposals the inquiry of various referents returned in a contemporary choreographic writing.
A specialized jury will value and reward those pieces where the interpretive and choreographic work integrates and resolves with updates the technical language, the contextual thematic, the presence of the performer, the treatment of space, music and the plastic design as part of the devices of choreographic writing.
Within the context of the 24th edition of the May Romerías, Holguín opens its doors to the contest, in tribute to its founder Pablo Roca, who thought of it as a space for the exchange and development of the Cuban dance.

Pieces of all genres and approaches to dance, between 4 and 12 minutes of duration.
The technical requirements must have a functional use in the piece.
Defended by a single interpreter on the stage space.
Contestants must be over 15 years old.

Paz in concert
The music in documentaries
Musivisión, music in documentaries, a space organized by the Esteban Salas Musical Heritage Cabinet, will screen the documentary Sinfonía Cubana, by director Eddy Cardosa and Marius Díaz, dedicated to the Cuban composer Alfredo Diez Nieto, who will also perform a small concert in charge of the interpreters Gabriel Chorens, Anolan González and Evelio Tieles.
The event will be held next Thursday, April 13, at 3:00 p.m., in the Aula Magna of the Saint Jerome University College of Havana, located on Mercaderes St. between Obispo St. and O’Relly St., Old Havana.
Silvio on tour… around the neighborhoods
The 82 concert from the tour around the neighborhoods of the troubadour Silvio Rodriguez will be next Thursday, April 13, starting at 7:00 pm, in the Quintana Park of Novoa (97 St. between 196 St. and 166 St., La Lisa Hights). During his presentation Silvio will be accompanied by Niurka González (flute and clarinet), Jorge Aragón (piano), Jorge Reyes (bass), Oliver Valdés (drums and percussion) and Emilio Vega (vibraphone and percussion). Villalobos, an unknown artist
The personal exhibition Villalobo, unknown, by the artist Nelson Villalobos Ferrer, will be inaugurated this Friday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the ARTIS 718 Gallery of the Cuban Fund of Cultural Property.
The exhibition will consist of works that have not been previously exhibited, and which are inscribed in different manifestations such as painting, drawings and assemblages that were made between the 80s and the beginning of the 90s of the last century, and an installation.
The pieces of Villalobos show a concern for issues related to identity, among which stands out the religiosity of African ancestry manifested in the recreation of their symbols and / or rituals; the relevance given to the fragment that is conceived as the cornerstone of his creations; as well as a clear tendency to emphasize the expressiveness of the gesture. With the combination of these elements, the exhibition pretends to be understood as a space charged with a mysterious and mystical aura.
Although in the national scope his work is not well known, Nelson Villalobos, who has spent much of his life outside of Cuba, belongs to the so-called generation of the 80s, a time when notable changes were introduced in the way of perceiving the artistic fact, and which has been considered by critics and specialists as one of the most relevant, prolific and experimental times within the history of Cuban art.
Los Carpinteros invites to the Museum of Machines
Los Carpinteros workshop (Este St. #8 between 37St. and Parque St., Nuevo Vedado, Havana) exhibits The Museum of Machines, an architecture of closed spaces in the 60’s and 70’s of the Cuban Revolution, an exhibition that gathers the expertise of architects and interior designers form the first years of the Cuban Revolution (Gonzalo Cordoba, Walter Betancourt, Mercedes Alvarez and Hugo D’Acosta, Vittorio Garatti, Sergio Varoni, Roberto Gottardi, Heriberto Duverger, Iván Espín, Eva Björklund, Reinaldo Togores, Joaquín Galván, Rodolfo Fernández Suárez, Antonio Quintana and María Teresa Muñiz).
The expo includes from furniture and interventions for high-level offices to the most utopian projects dedicated to extending the massive consumption of design in the new prefabricated houses of Cubans. With the curatorship of Abel González Fernández and the collaboration of artists like Leandro Feal, Hamlet Lavastida, Rigoberto Díaz and Renier Quer (Requer), the exhibition works on the imaginary and the experiences of integral and collective creation of the time.
Tony Cragg: sculptures and drawings
Two in one
In the Provincial Center of Plastic Arts and Design, located in Oficios St. #362 corner to Luz, Old Havana, it is the exhibited Reward and expanded (In)congruences.
The first proposal, the graduation thesis from the ISA of Osmel Herrera López, puts its views on the mechanisms of distribution and consumption of art from diverse social practices in the current Cuban context from different manifestations, making a particular analysis on the levels of autonomy and flexibility of the ethical margins that condition the artist.
The second is a exhibition of the group Farol 81 from Brazil where dissimilar modalities of the visual and technical arts are connected by the studies, investigations, discussions on criticism, workshops, etc. (from disciplines like Architecture, Philosophy, Art, History), among other common interests that involve its members.
Bob Dylan, photos in Havana
Bob Dylan. NY 1961-1964, photograph collection of the photojournalist Ted Russell, is exhibited in the Cuban Photo Library. In collaboration with Govinda Gallery from Washington D.C, the show gathers much of the beginnings of this composer and poet, even before he released their first album.
The show presents a more intimate, close and natural Dylan, the same in the kitchen of his New York apartment that adjusting the slide, playing guitar, in front of his typewriter, with Suze Rotolo, smoking-almost always-, composing , or singing at Gerde’s Folk City in Greenwich Village.
In the words of Christopher Murray, director of Govinda Gallery: “in Russell’s photographs, as in Dylan’s music, we can see and hear the songwriter’s conviction and compassion, his humor and his love for the song”
After his presentation until April 24, Bob Dylan. NY 1961-1964 will be presented in New York City.
Fidel through canvas
Two exhibitions dedicated to Fidel Castro Ruz, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, are exhibited in Havana. I care, photographs by Alex Castro, performed by important artists of Cuban art, remains open in the gallery The kingdom of this world of the José Martí National Library, while America is enough, by the artist Mustapha Boutadjine, will be until April 21 in the Experimental Graphic Workshop of Havana, located in the Cathedral Square.

Forced migrations of an artist
Next Friday, April 14 at 6:00 p.m., at the Hispanic American Center for Culture, the personal exhibition Forced Migrations, by the Chilean artist Patricio Moreno Toro, will be inaugurated. With a long international trajectory, this will be the first time that Moreno exhibits in our country. The exhibition will consist of 7 oils and 15 large-format watercolors.
His proposal is synthesized in a multi-thematic exhibition, where the main axis is also added to its manifestation of passive rebellion before a globalization marked by local wars driven by transnational interests, allegedly religious suicide bombers, situations of corruption and scams in politics, sport and business, attacks on the nature of oceans, jungles and fields, indiscriminate fishing of large consortiums, leading cause of extinction of species, such as neglect of the environment, which generates climatic changes, thawing, drought, hunger… and dramatic migrations.
Patricio Moreno has exhibited collectively and individually in America, Europe and Africa since 1960. His work takes part of collections in the National Museum of Fine Arts, Santiago de Chile, Museum of Modern Art, Managua, Nicaragua; National Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, San Jose, Costa Rica; Orebro Lans Museum, Orebro; Oxford University, Oxford, Great Britain; Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC, USA; California Museum of Science and Industry, Los Angeles, California, USA, et al.
Although the core of his work reflects his Chilean roots, his Latin heritage, his connections with other South American artists who have enjoyed a growing international visibility, he has also been definitively shaped by his continuous journeys, his form and content enriched by the exposure to a global aesthetic.
San Francisco from the green tiles

The art critic Mayté Hernández Lorenzo has pointed out about the play:
Departures is an act. An act of justice, of resistance, a confessional act. In front of the darkness of the seat, a waiting room of an airport. Mariela Brito, an actress and witness, is sitting with headphones through which she not only listens to music; we also do it. On the seats arranged geometrically in the room, in that sort of place that could be the physical illustration of the in between or the script of Perez Firmat that unites and separates, black and white and color photos of Cubans and Cubans who live or have lived outside the Island.

Four points on the stage
The project Cuatro teatro coreográfico, arrives to Havana after its recent premiere at the beginning of 2017 and its presentations at the Festival Theatrical Mejunje, the Festival of Young Theater of Holguín and a successful season in the Pepe Camejo Hall of Matanzas.
Directed by Yadiel Durán and Rubén Darío Salazar, director of Las Estaciones Theater, the show is an approximation to important personalities of Cuban culture: the yumurino poet José Jacinto Milanés, the great singer Rita Montaner, Ernesto Lecuona, one of our most important composers and the Sierra Maestra guerrilla fighter, Haydeé Santa María.
With a soundtrack that includes works by Ernesto Lecuona, Rafael Suarez, Jorge Anckerman, Martínez Casado, Eduardo Saborit, Miguel Matamoros, Carlos Puebla, Edesio Alejandro, Gerardo García, Marietta Veulens, Gema Corredera and Los muñequitos de Matanzas; the play uses texts by María Laura Germán and Rubén Darío Salazar about the testimonies of Ernesto Lecuona and Haydee Santa María, fragments of the play Don Juan Tenorio, José Zorrilla and the poem The kiss, by José Jacinto Milanés, as well as the dramatic piece It looks white, by Abelardo Estorino.
With the performances of Yadiel Durán himself, actress and playwright Maria Laura Germán, Iván García and the newest dancer Anis Estévez, the functions will take place in the Llauradó Hall this Friday and Saturday at 8:30 pm and on Sunday at 5:00 pm, the day that will also be held the space Uncovered Dance, organized by Danzology students of the School of Dance Art of the University of Arts.

…from Decameron to El Sótano
The comedy …from Decameron, based on the original work of Giovanni Boccaccio and versioned and staged by Lilian Dujarric, returns to the theatrical hall El Sótano (K St. between 25 St. and 27 St., Vedado) from April 7 and during the whole month on Fridays and Saturdays, at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m.
An epidemic of cholera hits the city and a group of people decide to flee to the countryside. Once there and feeling bored, they prefer to spend the time remembering some stories of Decameron. With this pretext the Gaviota Theater Company intends to bring the work of Boccaccio to the present so that the public, reader or not of the work, enjoy the presentation from a very close perspective to the Cuban reality.
