Coronavirus in Cuba: 792 new infections, three deaths and 1,060 discharges

With the three fatalities of the day, the pandemic’s death toll now stands at 376 in Cuba, 52 in the first fifteen days of March, a month in which the infections, with 12,408, show a notable increase and threaten to equal or exceed February, the worst period in a year of fighting this disease.

The coronavirus left 792 new infections in Cuba this Monday after the processing of 19,812 samples. The Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) also reported three deaths, and in its report today highlights the 1,060 discharges, with which the number of recovered reaches 58,610.

Most of the cases owe the infection to the autochthonous transmission (779) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, 744 were contacts of confirmed cases while 13 acquired the disease abroad.

Regarding higher numbers of COVID-19 patients, by provinces the records are as follows: Havana (437 between autochthonous and imported), Santiago de Cuba (51) and Pinar del Río (44).

On the contrary, Guantánamo (nine), Ciego de Ávila (seven) and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud (three) reported the lowest number of infections.

By incidence rate of the last 15 days, 12 municipalities of Havana, Mayabeque and Pinar del Río concentrate 45.7% of the transmission and, although nine of them are from the capital, Melena del Sur (Mayabeque), the first on the list, shows a statistic that doubles the rest of the territories with its 1,300.2 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Two years of pandemic in the Cuban calendar

Dr. Francisco Durán has once again drawn attention to the ages of the patients, especially due to the high incidence rates in the main risk groups, infants and those over 60 years of age.

At this point, the specificities on the day were: 125 under 20 years of age, 109 of them in pediatric ages and five infants; 242 between 20 and 39; 283 between 40 and 59; and 142 over 60.

The number of hospitalized until midnight fell to 23,140 and, of them, 3,956 were confirmed active cases. Meanwhile, the number of patients in intensive care fell slightly to 71: 30 in critical condition and 41 in serious condition.

The deaths of the day due to the virus were two women and a man who resided in the provinces of Havana, Granma and Santiago de Cuba. Their ages ranged from 69 to 79 years.
