Alarming increase in deaths from coronavirus in Cuba

Eleven deceased. “The increase in the levels of serious cases and critical cases expresses the need to protect vulnerable people, because the evolution is heading towards a serious torpid condition,” said Dr. Francisco Durán, visibly moved.

If yesterday a record of deaths due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus had been established in Cuba, today’s figures cause alarm in those who listen to it and shock those who give these figures: 11 fatalities identified this Tuesday, including a 38-year-old puerperal woman residing in San Antonio de los Baños (Artemisa) who spent 19 days in the hospital. The newborn, on the other hand, is well and tested negative for the coronavirus.

The remaining 10 deceased, six women and three men, were between 54 and 91 years old and they resided in Diez de Octubre, Arroyo Naranjo, Playa and Centro Habana (Havana); Jovellanos, Los Arabos and Jagüey Grande (Matanzas); Trinidad (Sancti Spíritus) and Baraguá (Ciego de Ávila).

“The increase in the levels of serious cases and critical cases expresses the need to protect vulnerable people because the evolution is heading towards a serious torpid condition,” said Dr. Francisco Durán, visibly moved.

In intensive care, an increase of 14 more admissions than yesterday was reported. Thus, there are 75 patients in intensive care; of them, 32 in critical condition and 43 in serious condition, according to the report of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP)

April, which in terms of infections has already exceeded the figures reported during 2020, not so in the preceding months of 2021, has added 62 deaths, of the 487 that COVID-19 has left in 13 months.

Daily death records have been broken in a week, warning of the complication of a disease that, according to Dr. Durán, “is increasingly aggressive.” “The identification of the new strains has to be influencing these results,” he said. The fatality in Cuba due to the pandemic is still 0.54%.

By age group, 171 of those identified in the last 24 hours had not reached the age of 20. Of these, 155 were of pediatric age, a group in which there were 774 active cases. Five are under one year.

The remaining infections, by age: 317 between 20 and 39; 292 between 40 and 59; and 179 were over 60.

Regarding infections in 24 hours, 959 were reported after the processing of 20,993 samples. Most of them (943) owe the disease to autochthonous transmission of the virus. The number of imported cases was 16, Cuban travelers and mostly foreigners from India, Russia and the United States.

Havana was the territory that reported the most infections (527), followed by Matanzas (141), Santiago de Cuba (71) and Granma (58). Meanwhile, Camagüey (five) and Guantánamo (three) registered the lowest numbers.

Eight municipalities, headed by Old Havana and Regla (Havana), Cabaiguán (Sancti Spíritus), Jagüey Grande and Pedro Betancourt (Matanzas) and Bayamo (Granma) represent 42.4% of the transmission in the last two weeks.

Until midnight, 24,600 people were hospitalized, there were 4,747 confirmed active cases and 1,027 discharges; 47.1% of the cases were asymptomatic.

I don’t understand these alarmist stories about Cuba. The Prensa Latina mouthpiece daily reports that the sky is falling.
But Cuba is ranked the 147th worst country for Covid deaths (meaning 146 have it worse). At least ONE HUNDRED other countries would LOVE to have their fatality rate.
These are very straightforward numbers, this is really not a matter of opinion. Their fatality rate is 43 per 1 million.
100 countries have five or ten or twenty times that rate, and a few have FIFTY!
In the United States, the death toll would stand at 14.276 rather than 578.187.

I’m sorry that anyone is sick in Cuba, of course, but Cuba should be relieved that so few people are or have been.
