Coronavirus in Cuba: daily infections average the pandemic’s highest number so far in May

Of the 1,186 infections, 1,138 are due to autochthonous transmission, 1,102 were contacts of confirmed cases, and the number of imported cases decreased to 48. The MINSAP also reported 10 deaths.

Regarding the SARS-CoV-2 virus during the day on Wednesday, the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported 1,186 infections, 10 deaths, an increase to 138 patients in intensive care and 6,234 confirmed active cases, the highest figure for the last 15 days.

So far in May, the pandemic has left 12,939 infections, averaging a daily 1,078, “an extremely high figure, which represents the highest average in 14 months,” as Dr. Francisco Durán underlined in his details of the report on Cuban television.

The 10 deaths correspond to four women and six men, among whom was the president of the Cuban Baseball Federation and one of the most successful managers in the history of this sport on the island, Higinio Vélez. All between the ages of 47 and 79 and residing in the municipalities of Havana, Mayabeque, Matanzas, Las Tunas, Camagüey and Granma.

Of the 1,186 infections, 1,138 are due to autochthonous transmission, 1,102 were contacts of confirmed cases, and the number of imported cases decreased to 48, mainly Cuban travelers from coming from Russia (44), although cases from the Bahamas, Italy and the United States were also reported.

In addition, six foreigners tested positive for the virus, after the processing of 22,934 samples throughout the country: a Bahamian with imported transmission, in addition to four Congolese and a Spanish as a result of autochthonous transmission.

Two years of pandemic in the Cuban calendar

Havana, where 12 municipalities concentrate 52.6% of transmission in the last two weeks, reported 690 cases, followed by Pinar del Río (60), Sancti Spíritus (50) and Las Tunas (50).

On the contrary, Guantánamo (three) was the only territory with less than ten infections in 24 hours, while the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud did not report any cases.

Havana and Mayabeque have the highest incidence rates in the last 15 days, a period in which Cuba increased its indicator to 137.2 per 100,000 inhabitants.

 Until midnight, 24,602 people were hospitalized in some sort of health facility because of the virus and its disease, COVID-19, on the island. Of the 138 in intensive care, 47 were in critical condition and 91 were in serious condition.

The MINSAP reported 1,032 discharges, with which 113,493 patients have already recovered.

Regarding ages, 173 were under 20; 385 between 20 and 39; 414 between 40 to 59; and 214 over 60.

On the day, 40.4% of those diagnosed were asymptomatic.
