Of the patients diagnosed with the coronavirus yesterday, 1,029 are autochthonous cases, the highest number of infections within the island since April 4, according to the figures given by the expert.
The epidemiological study detected that 998 of the new cases were contacts of previously confirmed patients, while the source of infection of 31 patients could not be determined.
Cuba is going through its worst wave of infections since the beginning of the pandemic, with a high spread of the virus throughout the country, 47 active transmission events and an incidence rate of 132 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
With several strains of the coronavirus circulating, so far this month 9,296 patients have been confirmed with the contagious disease, an average of more than 1,000 cases daily, which represents the highest number since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.
While waiting for restrictive measures to limit transmission, Havana continues to be the epicenter of the epidemic on the island and added 587 new COVID-19 cases during the day, with which the incidence rate of the virus in the Cuban capital rose to 360.2 infections per 100,000 people.
Havana is followed by Matanzas, which reported 138 cases on Friday, Granma (67) and Sancti Spíritus, with 55 new confirmed patients.
According to Dr. Durán, the number of patients in intensive care dropped slightly to 57, of which 32 are in critical condition and 25 in serious condition.
A total of 85,572 people have been infected since the beginning of the epidemic in Cuba, and yesterday the death toll from COVID-19 reached 453.
