Cuba focused on national tourism for its reopening

Help us keep OnCuba alive here The Council of Ministers of Cuba this Wednesday addressed the recovery strategy after controlling the COVID-19 epidemic on the island and the measures that will be implemented gradually, including the promotion of national tourism in a first phase. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez chaired the meeting of the highest government body in which the plan for de-escalation measures was examined and approved, which will start with a first stage divided into three phases, the details of which will be disclosed this Thursday in the Mesa Redonda TV program. https://twitter.com/DiazCanelB/status/1271040281492758528 At this time, Cuba reports less hospitalizations than medical discharges in the health system, the active COVID-19 foci are decreasing, as well as the new daily infections, and almost all the municipalities and provinces have not reported incidents in practically a month, according to the president, who considered that the country is “in a position to return to normality.” Normalization will take place “gradually and asymmetrically” to avoid a fresh outbreak and to develop the capacities to deal with it, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero was also quoted as saying by state media. Cuba: borders will remain closed until at least August 1

Help us keep OnCuba alive here Although the Cuban government has not released any official statement in this regard, Cuba’s borders will remain closed until at least August 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic. This was confirmed by the effective date of the measures established in NOTAM A2090 of the Institute of Civil Aeronautics of Cuba (IACC). This technical notice, known as the “Notice to Airmen” or “Notice to Mariners,” is submitted to aviation authorities to report on the establishment or modification of aeronautical facilities, services, procedures, or hazards. In this case, the IACC NOTAM establishes that–for the time being– “aircraft operations are allowed only in the interest of medical collaboration, humanitarian aid and cargo transfer, in accordance with established sanitary measures,” until August 1. The same tentative opening date is handled in a tweet from the United States Embassy in Havana. “On June 5, the Cuban government extended the closure of the airport until at least August 1,” says a tweet dated this Monday and which refers to a new health alert also issued by the diplomatic headquarters that day. https://twitter.com/USEmbCuba/status/1270085849393303553 According to the notice, the United States Embassy is exploring options to cope with the sustained interruption of...

Spain: bill could grant nationality to descendants of Spaniards in Cuba and the rest of the world

Help us keep OnCuba alive here The Spanish Senate plans to debate and vote for the third time on a bill of Spanish nationality, after the Izquierda Confederal  party registered it again with the aim of settling “a historical debt” of the so-called “Grandchildren’s Law.” It is a topic followed closely outside Spain, and in particular in Cuba, where if approved, thousands of people could benefit. According to statements by the senator of En Comú Podem, Sara Vilà Galán, cited by the Spanish press, the approval of this bill would make it possible to overcome certain gaps in the well-known Law of Historical Memory of 2007, which has left without protection children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Spanish emigrants, a community that today exceeds 2.5 million people scattered throughout the world. https://twitter.com/SaraVilaG/status/1265607272102801409 Among the “unforgivable” oversights, according to the senator, is the case of the children of those who obtained the nationality of origin through Law 52/2007 who, at the time it came into force, were of legal age and that, as established in the law, they did not obtain nationality, contrary to what happened with minors, who did benefit. Furthermore, the bill incorporates the issue of gender discrimination. “Women who...

Minister of health recognizes increase in curve of contagion with coronavirus in Cuba

Help us keep OnCuba alive here The curve of infections with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Cuba “has gone a little above the most favorable scenario,” Cuban Minister of Public Health Dr. José Ángel Portal acknowledged this Friday on the Mesa Redonda television program. The increase in cases in recent days will cause the recovery in the country to be postponed more in the struggle against COVID-19, with a curve of active cases that remains in the limit zone, with the risk of moving to the middle zone, a situation that happens almost at the tip of the epidemic, commented Portal quoted by the Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN) news agency. Although the forecast models indicate that the island maintains the limited local transmission phase, the head of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) explained that this trend has varied with the cases of local transmission that occurred in Havana and Matanzas in recent weeks. The most recent report on the situation of the coronavirus in Cuba, issued this Saturday, records a total of 40 positive cases, about twenty of them associated with a Cuban merchant ship that arrived through the province of Matanzas. https://oncubanews.com/en/cuba/cuba-reports-about-20-infections-with-coronavirus-on-a-merchant-ship/ One of the most important outbreaks...

International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) establishes rules for flying in times of coronavirus

Help us keep OnCuba alive here The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has published the regulations for flying in times of coronavirus. The document, entitled “Providing a safe and sanitary operating environment for passengers and crew,” establishes a protocol for flights in these new conditions. The goal is for passengers to not have physical contact with each other. As of now, traveling will only be allowed with a backpack or bag that fits under the seat in front of the passenger. According to ICAO, the reason for the measure is related to the fact that both when boarding or getting off the aircraft, the placement and removal of carry-on bags causes numerous reasons for contact between people, regardless of the need to ask for help―not uncommon―or in the end delivering the suitcase so that it finally travels in what Cubans call “the belly of the plane.” https://youtu.be/9IkM70XMGyo Other ICAO instructions include the need to use facemasks on all flights, at all airports, on all aircraft, to check in online and to work contactless in duty free shops and on shipping. Regulations are also issued for the use of the on-board toilets, with a reserved area exclusively for the crew of...

Cuba rejects new U.S. sanctions
