Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and ex-President and leader of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) Raúl Castro met in Havana with Vice President of the Central Committee of the Workers Party of North Korea Ri Su- yong, with whom they reviewed bilateral relations.
Díaz-Canel and Ri Su-yong spoke “about bilateral relations between the two nations and the traditional ties of friendship” that unite their respective countries.
The president thanked the hospitality he received during his visit to North Korea in November 2018 and recalled “with satisfaction” the exchange he had with the leader of the Asian country, Kim Jong-un.
On the same day, Raul Castro and Kim Jong-un’s envoy held an exchange about “the excellent state” of the relations that unite the peoples, parties and governments of Cuba and Korea, and ratified “the will to continue deepening them,” the island’s state media reported.
They also “addressed issues of the international situation” during the meeting, which was attended by the second secretary of the PCC, José Ramón Machado Ventura.
Ri Su-yong, considered a figure very close to Kim Jong-un, was in Cuba in July 2018, when he personally delivered a message from the North Korean leader to Díaz-Canel.

Díaz-Canel gave the North Korean leader an unpublished collection of representative songs from the island performed by renowned artists such as singer-songwriters Carlos Puebla and Silvio Rodríguez.
Ri Su-yong arrived in Cuba last Monday on a work visit and has carried out an agenda of interviews with high-level government officials in Havana and spoke with Cuban Vice President Roberto Morales, the president of the National Assembly of People’s Power, Esteban Lazo, and the interim minister of Foreign Affairs, Marcelino Medina.

Cuba and North Korea established diplomatic relations on August 29, 1960, a year after the coming to power of the Revolution led by Fidel Castro on the island. Relations between the two nations are close and with frequent exchanges of visits.
During the meeting held in Pyongyang between the president of Cuba and his North Korean counterpart, the two agreed to further strengthen bilateral ties.
They also expressed their support and reciprocal solidarity and exchanged views on issues of common interest and about the international situation, as reported by the North Korean media.
