Valencia considers requesting doctors from Cuba to face pandemic

The Generalitat Valenciana is contemplating the possibility of requesting health professionals from other countries, such as Cuba, if the situation caused by COVID-19 is prolonged, in order to guarantee the staff of the Community of Valencia “moments of rest” and that they don’t suffer as much pressure while providing care. This was stated this Monday at a press conference by Minister of Health Ana Barceló, who said that work is underway to ensure that at a certain time it may be necessary to “refresh” the local health teams due to the pressure of care and give them some time off. “There are hospitals that have more pressure and if this is prolonged, we need them not to live with so much pressure and have moments of rest,” according to the minister, who added that they have in mind “the possibility of being able to bring professionals from another country if necessary.” https://twitter.com/GVAsanitat/status/1244551416024367109?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1244551416024367109&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Foncubanews.com%2Fcuba%2Fvalencia-considera-solicitar-medicos-a-cuba-para-enfrentar-la-pandemia%2F Barceló also affirmed that in principle the Generalitat would contemplate requesting reinforcements from Cuba, because of the language and to facilitate communication, but China and other countries are also considered, with professionals who speak English, but guaranteeing that there can be “fluid” communication with the Spanish staff. Cubans start applauding doctors

A call was circulating yesterday on social networks for Cubans to go out to their balconies and windows to applaud the doctors who are already fighting against COVID-19. “Eternal applause to Cuban and world doctors. Today at 9.00 pm, just after the cannon blast, we pay tribute. A beautiful, moving gesture we’ll continue to repeat every night,” wrote Cuban journalist Raúl Rodríguez on his Facebook account. The date is at 9 at night, from now on, every day. It’s the emblematic hour for Havanans, after they hear the boom and feel the tremor that in many areas of the city left by the cannon blast, night after night, from the fortress of La Cabaña at the entrance to the bay. A custom that comes from the times of the colony, when the city was surrounded by a wall, and the cannon blast served to warn of the closing of its doors. “I just confessed it to some friends: I went out, applauded, and it was the moment of greatest happiness in the last days. Surely there will be more of us tomorrow,” wrote Tania Pino, professor at the Faculty of Communication at the University of Havana, also on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/camila.fernandezdelvalle/videos/2847871771968035/?t=0...

Italian doctors: “What we’re experiencing is like a tattoo”

Their eyes look tired, their cheekbones are raw because of the protective masks and they don't smile. The doctors and nurses at the forefront of the coronavirus pandemic in Italy are almost unrecognizable behind their masks, uniforms, gloves and hair nets: the flimsy armor that they put on at the start of each shift as the only barrier against contagion. Organizations in U.S. ask for suspension of sanctions against Cuba because of COVID-19

Several U.S. organizations asked the government of that country to temporarily suspend the economic sanctions against Cuba, in view of the threat of the coronavirus pandemic caused by COVID-19. In a statement issued this Thursday, the organizations called for the elimination of ceilings imposed by the Donald Trump administration on sending remittances to Cuba, as well as the sanctions that prevent donations of medicines and medical equipment and those that restrict financial transactions. https://twitter.com/WOLA_org/status/1243300473974804483 The statement, signed by eight organizations based in the United States, asks Washington to temporarily eliminate sanctions that prevent aid from other countries to Cuba, including that which prevents sales to the island of equipment containing 10% of the parts or pieces with U.S. patent. The statement added that the U.S. government’s measures cause many foreign companies to hesitate to do business with Cuba. Lastly, it requested the suspension of sanctions that restrict support for the Cuban people, alleging that although there is an exemption to export certain items to the island, the U.S. Department of Commerce requires exporting entities to demonstrate that these goods will only benefit the Cuban people, and not the government or Communist Party of Cuba officials. https://oncubanews.com/cuba-ee-uu/companias-cancelan-negocios-con-cuba-por-temor-a-sanciones-de-eeuu/ The organizations involved in...

The first COVID-19 patient healed in Cuba thanked the medical staff who treated him during his hospitalization after testing positive for the disease.
“They were my parents, my brothers, my friends,” he said in an interview published by the official Granma newspaper.
Álvarez, 25 years old, was the first Cuban coronavirus carrier reported on the island, after receiving his wife, a Bolivian citizen residing in Milan, Italy. Previously, three Italian tourists had been confirmed, one of whom died.
He said that his couple had arrived in Cuba with no apparent symptoms of the disease, but after a few days both began to experience slight respiratory problems.
Both went to a healthcare center in the city of Santa Clara, where Álvarez lives; there they were declared as suspects and sent to an isolation center. They were then transferred to the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK), in Havana, where the young man tested positive for the disease.
“Imagine how I felt then; it was the end of the world for me. I was scared, I thought in the worst, in my family, in my little girl Ana Sofía, only one-year-old. But I had the strength to resist in the middle of the storm, because I knew the quality of Cuban medicine,” said Álvarez, quoted by Granma.
“I have no words to express my gratitude to Cuba, which has been able to train doctors, nurses and specialists who are so humane and of such a professional level,” he acknowledged.
The young man from Villa Clara praised the medical personnel that works at the Manuel Piti Fajardo Hospital in Villa Clara and at the IPK, and thanked them for making him feel that he was not alone in those days of isolation.
“I lacked nothing there, neither medicines nor resources of any kind, and they even spoiled me a little, because if I was hungry, it didn't matter if it was two in the morning, they brought yogurt or some food; if I wanted to talk to my family, they facilitated the conversation over the phone; in short, I was pleased in everything,” he said.
Álvarez, who is kept under rigorous monitoring by the family doctor, recommended that Cubans not expose themselves and take precautionary measures in the face of the danger of the coronavirus.
“I’m worried, because I see some people who are still in the street and without the necessary awareness for the current situation; to them I say they should take care of themselves, that this can affect anyone. We must listen to the guidance of the government, which is working very hard to avoid the worst. If we follow all the measures, we are going to get out of this, because we are a fighting people, no one doubts that, we are going to win,” he said.
Cuba reported this Thursday the second death due to COVID-19 and 10 new positive cases, bringing the total number to 67, while 1,603 patients are kept in isolation centers.
Another 36,056 people are monitored in their homes, and so far only 893 diagnostic tests have been carried out to detect the presence of the coronavirus.
