Help us keep OnCuba alive here Cuba reported eight new COVID-19 positive cases, and adds another consecutive day without deaths, Dr. Francisco Durán, director of epidemiology of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), reported this Saturday. Havana registered all patients diagnosed with the disease on its first day of de-escalation, thus in the last 15 days it has had a total of 55 confirmed coronavirus cases, with which the Cuban capital’s rate of incidence is 2.58 patients per 100,000 inhabitants. https://twitter.com/MINSAPCuba/status/1279408072943906817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1279408072943906817%7Ctwgr%5E&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Foncubanews.com%2Fcuba%2Fcuba-reporta-ocho-nuevos-contagiados-con-la-covid-19%2F A total of 54 persons remain hospitalized on the island, two of which are reported seriously ill. No critically ill patients are reported, according to the daily report of the MINSAP on the situation of the COVID-19 epidemic in Cuba. Four of the cases reported from the Friday report were asymptomatic, and 76 people are in isolation centers under suspicion. In his usual press conference, Durán pointed out that in the new post-COVID-19 recovery scenario that reached its second phase in most of the Cuban provinces with the exception of Havana and Matanzas, “it is when the protection measures have to be maximized, because we are already on the street, we return to activity and the risk increases.”...

Unemployment rate in U.S. falls to 11%, but new job closings are expected

Help us keep OnCuba alive here The unemployment rate in the United States fell to 11.1% after the economy added 4.8 million jobs, the government reported this Thursday. However, the recovery in the labor market could be in trouble due to a new round of closings and layoffs in the face of the new increase in coronavirus cases. Although it fell compared to 13.3% in May, it still remains at Great Depression levels. In addition, the data was collected during the second week of June, just before several states started reversing or suspending their economic reopening to try to contain a new onslaught of the virus. The news was released as the number of daily confirmed infections in the United States reached a new all-time high of 50,700, more than double from last month, according to the Johns Hopkins University count. The data was collected during the second week of June, just before several states started reversing or suspending their economic reopening to try to contain a new onslaught of the virus. The rebound, which is mostly concentrated in the south and west of the country, has caused states like California, Texas, Arizona and Florida to close again bars, restaurants,...

Havana enters this Friday in the first post-COVID-19 phase

Help us kep OnCuba alive here Havana will enter this Friday in the first phase of the post-COVID-19 recovery, with which all the Cuban territories will have begun the gradual return to normality. The island’s authorities also decreed the passage of the rest of the provinces to the second phase of the de-escalation, also starting this Friday, with the exception of Matanzas, which will do so next week. Even though the capital maintains the majority of the country’s active cases, it is showing progress in dealing with the disease, according to the Cuban government’s consideration, announced this Wednesday afternoon by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero. As pointed out by Marrero, who is quoted by official media, “the established health indicators have been generally met for seven days, even though some daily cases are reported, an issue that is part of this process.” However, in the opinion of the Cuban government, Havana “will continue to be the place where the greatest risks are concentrated, which is why Havana residents should enter this new stage with great responsibility and caution, strictly complying with the established sanitary measures.” https://oncubanews.com/cuba/la-habana-se-prepara-para-iniciar-la-primera-fase-post-covid-19/ Meanwhile, the Havana authorities recognized “the complexity and commitment” that this step represents, and explained...

Rice production in Cuba far from consumption needs

Help us keep OnCuba alive here Rice production in Cuba in 2020 will fall far short of the country’s consumption needs, according to projections by the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI). Of the 700,000 tons of rice the island needs to cover the regulated basic food basket and social consumption, only the “insufficient amount” of 162,000 tons will be produced, the official Granma newspaper affirmed this Tuesday. Lázaro Díaz, director of the Rice Technological Department, of the MINAGRI Agricultural Business Group, told the publication that rice production has not been as affected by the drought in 2020 as other years, and attributed its poor results mainly to the “strengthening of the U.S. economic blockade.” Díaz affirmed that Washington’s embargo “particularly affects the grain harvest due to the low availability of fuels for ground machinery and agricultural aviation, the absence of urea fertilizer, and other inputs that affect the industry’s efficiency.” The executive did not mention any possible effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2018, the production of rice, one of the main dishes in the diet of Cubans, established a historical record on the island with 304,000 tons, but a year later, despite the fact that the projections “previewed a successful...

In what does Cuba’s genetic study of patients recovered from COVID-19 consist of?

Help us keep OnCuba alive here The appearance at the end of 2019 of a new coronavirus and its rapid spread throughout the world until it became a pandemic, has put the scientific community to work with an intensity rarely observed. Although currently the main international research is focused on the search for the vaccine, the mass immunization as the only way to stop such a contagious virus, another question arises from a characteristic of the virus, or rather how each person responds to the contagion: Why do some die from COVID-19 and others don’t get to feel the slightest symptom? The answer may lie in genetics; that’s why Cuba launched a research that takes this factor into account in the response of those who suffered from the disease and those who have already been discharged. According to the director of the National Center for Medical Genetics, Beatriz Marcheco, the project includes clinical-epidemiological, laboratory, basically hematological, immunological, and DNA studies. The research began its clinical stage in early June, in the provinces of Pinar del Río, Cienfuegos and Las Tunas, as well as the municipality of La Lisa, in Havana. The study seeks to find out the blood group and...

Japan includes Cuba among countries with migration ban due to pandemic

Help us keep OnCuba alive here Japan included Cuba this Monday in a list of 129 countries with a migratory ban due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from which entry to Japanese territory will not be allowed as of July 1. Travelers of non-Japanese nationality coming from or who have been in the countries affected by the measure in the 14 days prior to arrival in Japan, will not be able to enter the archipelago. The new affected countries are Cuba, Guyana, Guatemala, Grenada, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Haiti, Georgia, Algeria, Iraq, Esuatini (Swaziland), Cameroon, Senegal, Central African Republic, Mauritania and Lebanon, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified in a statement. The Japanese government had already issued an order advising its nationals to not make any non-essential trip to any of these countries due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Japan has made the same recommendation for the rest of the countries that are part of its migration ban, including the United States, Spain and Italy, as COVID-19 spread.
