Measures presented to decongest public transportation in Cuban capital

Help us keep OnCuba alive According to the Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN) news agency, a strategy to try to decongest public transportation in the city during the so-called “rush hours” was presented this Wednesday at the Havana Provincial Defense Council (CDP) and to contribute to social distancing in the first post-COVID-19 stage. Minister of Transportation Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila said that although reinforcements had been organized so far and they had resorted to alternatives to provide a service consistent with that first phase, Havana was working with less than 600 buses, which is why it was necessary to evaluate other measures to avoid crowding. Among the possible alternatives is, he stressed, changing the hours of movements of entities―services and health, for example. Initially, it is planned to implement them in education, higher education, commerce, gastronomy, health and transportation. It was also announced that Havana has around 820,000 workers, and that about 644,000 belong to the state sector, so it is essential that the agencies contribute to reorganizing work activities. https://youtu.be/zlYeQWtzGXM The deputy governor of Havana, Yanet Hernández, insisted on the need to continue promoting telework and distance work in order to reduce the number of people who need to go...

Climate change would cause 14 Cuban settlements to disappear by 2050

Help us keep OnCuba alive here A study on climate change carried out by Cuban scientists estimates that at least 14 human settlements would disappear by 2050 in Cuba, while another 100 would suffer partial damages. Scientific research indicates that rising sea levels could cause the disappearance of more than 14,100 homes located in coastal communities, which would imply the displacement of around 41,300 people in the next 30 years. The urgent need to forecast the impacts of inland sea penetrations more accurately led a group of specialists from the central and eastern region of Cuba to create the “Metodología para el estudio climático de las inundaciones costeras en Cuba. Aplicación en la costa norte de la región central y orientales” (Methodology for the climatic study of coastal floods in Cuba. Application in the north coast of the central and eastern region), published in the Revista Cubana de Meteorología. For the study, the scientists used data compiled by the island’s meteorological stations of coastal areas, located in Cayo Coco, Cabo Lucrecia (Holguín) and Punta de Maisí (Guantánamo), according to MSc. Orlando Córdova, quoted by the newspaper Invasor. Other instruments used in the methodology were the synoptic maps of the surface...

U.S.: First COVID-19 vaccine shows encouraging results

Help us keep OnCuba alive U.S. researchers reported that the first COVID-19 vaccine tested in the United States produced the expected responses in the immune system. Now the vaccine is on its way to the most important phase, which will begin around July 27: the study of 30,000 people to test whether it really is strong enough to protect against the coronavirus. “No matter how you look at it, this is good news,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease expert, told The Associated Press. https://twitter.com/NIH/status/1283149805162618881?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1283149805162618881%7Ctwgr%5E&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Foncubanews.com%2Fmundo%2Feeuu-primera-vacuna-contra-la-covid-19-muestra-resultados-alentadores%2F The experimental vaccine has been developed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and by Moderna Inc. The volunteers developed what are known as neutralizing antibodies in the bloodstream―key molecules to block infections―at levels comparable to those found in people who survived COVID-19, the research team reported in the New England Journal of Medicine. “This is a basic component needed to move forward with trials that could determine if the vaccine protects against infection,” said Dr. Lisa Jackson of the Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle, who was in charge of the study. There were no serious side effects. But more than half of the study participants reported reactions similar to those...

Cuba today with six new cases of COVID-19

Help us keep OnCuba alive Cuba woke up this Wednesday with six new infections and no deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, according to Dr. Francisco Durán in his morning press conference. The Cuban epidemiologist also added that all were Cuban, contacts of confirmed case, and four were asymptomatic at the time of their diagnosis. https://twitter.com/MINSAPCuba/status/1283391659460485120?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1283391659460485120%7Ctwgr%5E&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Foncubanews.com%2Fcuba%2Fcuba-hoy-con-seis-nuevos-casos-de-covid-19%2F “Two important factors of this disease, the contacts of confirmed cases and the asymptomatic ones,” Durán warned when referring to these data. This time there were more men than women diagnosed (4-2) on a day when two patients were discharged and only one person was reported seriously ill. By age group, five are between 40 and 60 years old, and one was a minor: nine years old. There were 263 hospitalized patients, while 149 people were under primary healthcare surveillance. Areas of Havana with outbreaks of coronavirus no longer in phase 1 of de-escalation

Help us keep OnCuba alive Several areas of Havana with outbreaks of coronavirus and “under reinforced isolation measures” are no longer in phase 1 of the post-COVID-19 recovery along with the rest of the city, according to Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar , president of the Provincial Defense Council (CDP). In a meeting of that government body, reported on by the local press, Torres Iríbar noted that “the province in general is in phase 1” of the de-escalation, but that communities such as Los Sitios, Amistad, Pilar-Atarés and Lawton, where cases have been reported in recent days, are not in this phase, “but have gone back to a scenario of COVID-19 confrontation.” To these areas he also added a part of San Francisco de Paula, Cuatro Caminos del Cotorro and Lechuga-Marrero, in Arroyo Naranjo, the latter as a way of prophylaxis, taking into account its concomitance with the municipality of Cotorro and the province of Mayabeque, which recently have also registered cases. The president of the CDP said that “the guard cannot be lowered,” and that the established measures have to be demanded and controlled by the local authorities. He affirmed that “the aspiration is to go to phase 2,” but...

Coronavirus in Cuba: four months living with the pandemic

Help us keep OnCuba alive Just a few hours after the first cases of coronavirus were detected in Cuba four months ago, Dr. Francisco Durán, who became the face of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) in the fight against COVID-19, said in his already traditional morning appearances that it seemed the disease was infinite. It may be a simple comment in the midst of his usual presentation of data, but he accurately portrayed the serious problem this has become for humanity and, of course, for Cuba, since last March 11 Cubans started getting familiarized with a disease that, to date, has infected 2,426 people on the island. Photo: Otmaro Rodríguez. Since then, the data has changed quite a bit. If the first positive cases were three Italian tourists passing through the colonial city of Trinidad, the new infections detected in recent weeks through PCR tests all correspond to Cubans, almost always related to other already detected cases. The irruption was dramatic. On March 11, the World Health Organization declared as a pandemic a disease that started in the Chinese province of Wuhan, later baptized as COVID-19 and caused by a virus already known to all: SARS-CoV-2. As the...

The General Controller of Medicines, Dr. VG Somani, stated that the use of the medicine will be limited to Indian patients with severe symptoms, since said treatment is applied when cytokine release syndrome occurs, causing patients to present acute or severe respiratory distress. The approval of the Cuban monoclonal drug has been included since July 10 in India’s protocol, according to the PTI press agency, quoted in a note by the island’s Agencia Cubana de Noticias news agency. Despite being used for the first time against COVID-19, Itolizumab was in regular use in India for the treatment of psoriasis.
