89% of pediatric patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Cuba are already on clinical or clinical-epidemiological discharge, thanks to their very favorable evolution, said Dr. Francisco Durán, director of epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health, this Tuesday. The island’s health authorities have reported 390 pediatric patients (under 18 years) with the coronavirus since the COVID-19 epidemic began, of which 347 have already been completely cured of the disease, reported Prensa Latina news agency. Cuba starts recovery phase after a less damaging cyclone than expected

This Tuesday Cuba started throughout its territory the phase of recovery and evaluation of the damages caused by Tropical Storm Laura, which between Sunday and Monday crossed the island from one tip to the other without leaving victims but did damage electrical networks, state entities, homes and crops. Initial predictions estimated that the cyclone would cross the entire country in half and pass over Havana in a route that would have caused havoc, but finally the trajectory changed and the center of the storm moved to the waters of the south coast until its exit through the westernmost tip of Cuba. With the entire island in the “recovery phase,” the fourth and last of the stages established by the Cuban Civil Defense in the face of a meteorological event, President Miguel Díaz-Canel asked that work on the restoration be carried out “as quickly as possible” to prevent the damages from being added to pending repairs from previous storms and hurricanes. The most widespread damage was that suffered by the electrical system. Hundreds of thousands of Cuban homes were without electricity this Tuesday, with a special incidence in the province of Pinar del Río, where 95% of homes had problems with...

Experts: monetary unification is necessary, but not sufficient, to update the Cuban economy

Help us keep OnCuba alive The long-awaited, but not yet materialized, monetary unification is a “necessary condition, although not sufficient, to reorder and update the national economy,” said experts from the Central Bank of Cuba (BCC). In an analysis on the subject published this Thursday in the official newspaper Granma, the specialists referred to “the imperatives” of eliminating the dual currency existing on the island since the 1990s, at a time when the island is going through “a crisis aggravated by impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global productive system and the tightening of the United States blockade against Cuba.” After making a retrospective of the measures implemented for almost three decades to establish and regulate the monetary and exchange duality and the conditions for its intended dismantling, the experts addressed the underlying problems of the current scenario that, in their opinion, “must be solved urgently.” Ian Pedro Carbonell, specialist at the BCC’s General Department for Economic Policies, explained how the current duality “generates distortions in the business sector and in the way the population interacts with it,” while producing an “internal gulf between the retail price and wholesale price.” “One of the problems that requires more attention is...
