Until last May 3, the Cuban capital registered 377 deaths as a result of the infectious disease, to which should be added another six reported in the city at the close of this Tuesday.

Under the slogan “All rights for all people,” the days’ activities will take place mainly on virtual platforms due to the COVID-19 pandemic, just like last year, and has as a context the transformations envisaged in the legal reorganization of the country, in line with the Constitution enacted in 2019.

The MINSAP reported eight deaths due to COVID-19, 110 patients in ICUs and 986 discharges.

The new resolution comes after the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands (Mediterranean) ordered the reopening of the case to expand the demand in order to include Cuba in the procedure, although the Cuban State has not appeared in the case.

The head of the Department of Addiction Research at the Medical Sciences University of Havana, Justo Reinaldo Fabelo, explained that the drugs most used in Cuba are tobacco and alcohol, “but during the last decade the abuse of illegal substances has increased, and prescription drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, synthetic marijuana, as well as drugs such as tramadol, morphine and carbamazepine.”  

During this Monday’s meeting of the temporary work group for the prevention and control of the new coronavirus, and as seen in a television report, the Ministry of Public Health also referred to “a group of actions that has to do with patients’ stay in intensive care” and that point “to opportunistic germs that also generate complications.”

According to Agreement Number 149 of the Council of State, the group is made up of 31 people, who are responsible for “perfecting the work carried out for years on different versions of the document.”

This is the ICUs’ highest record on the island, in a day in which the infections reported by the MINSAP exceeded one thousand (1,019) and there were 11 deaths as a result of the pandemic.

Francisco Hernández, head of the clinical study, explained that at this stage “there will be a follow-up of all volunteers in order to detect positive symptomatic cases infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus,” which “will allow us to determine the proportions of the study subjects who became ill according to the group: placebo or vaccinated.”

Regarding infections, 884 were from autochthonous transmission and 48 were imported cases, with the majority incidence of Cuban travelers from Russia.

The study applied in three-shot doses included more than 48,000 volunteers from the capitals of Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo and Granma provinces, in order to test its effectiveness against COVID-19.

The General Department of Provincial Transportation of the Cuban capital summoned Cuban state enterprises and forms of non-state management related to this means of transportation, to present their proposals for the tender for this system, which will have nine bike stations and 350 vehicles.

In addition, with the 10 deaths and the 864 discharges reported this Sunday, the island’s death toll is now 664 and 102,339 patients have already recovered, although the Cuban health authorities recognize that a part of the latter have aftereffects due to the infectious disease.

According to a note from the Provincial Department of Health of the Cuban capital, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara was received “at dawn on May 2” at the Emergency Center of the General Calixto García Hospital, where he arrived “in a medical transport, conscious, and wandering without difficulty” and “with a diagnosis of referred voluntary starvation.”

The Cuban Ministry of Public Health reported that the death of two children in Guantánamo after receiving Ampicillin treatment was associated with violations during the process of preparing the drug and with the patients’ acute infectious diseases.

Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara went on a hunger and thirst strike last weekend, after denouncing that police forces had raided his home and had extracted and damaged works of art of his authorship. The official press calls into question the strike and considers it part of a subversive plan organized from outside the island.

The Ministry of Public Health reported this Saturday 915 new cases of coronavirus, 872 discharges and 10 deaths, making April the worst of the entire pandemic, with 31,346 patients diagnosed and 229 deaths.

Marino Murillo, the head of the Guidelines Implementation Commission, said in a tweet.

“False news about the International Mobile Recharge service is circulating on social networks. In this regard, we inform you that ETECSA will continue to provide this service, as well as the promotional offers that are implemented based on the available commercialization conditions,” the enterprise clarified in its profiles on social networks.

“I have ordered that the work in ICUs be reviewed and to delve into all the causes of the re-outbreak of COVID-19 in Cuba, which should not be sought only in the aggressiveness of the new strains that circulate in the country,” Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel tweeted.

The 12 deaths of the day corresponded to five women and seven men, aged between 54 and 85 years. They resided in the municipalities in Havana, Cienfuegos, Mayabeque and Camagüey.

The services sector stands out as one of the main forays into the international market, the general director of Foreign Trade, Vivian Herrera, recently published on her official Twitter account.

The country’s death toll due to this disease is now 632 and the fatality rate is 0.59%, “lower than the world’s,” stressed the national director of Epidemiology, “but extremely high for our country.”
